.

Causes of Whiplash

While most people associate whiplash with an auto injury, it can also be caused by any sudden, forceful back-and-forth movements of the neck. Patients with whiplash may experience damaged ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles in the neck. It’s one of the most common injuries that occurs after a collision and can even affect those involved in accidents in vehicles going 15 miles per hour or less. If a car is struck from behind, it causes the head to move in an unnatural way and at a speed you’re not normally accustomed to, causing intense strain in the neck and shoulder regions. It may also be caused by sports-related injuries, work injuries, or a sudden fall.

Whiplash Symptoms

While every patient is different, these are the most common symptoms of whiplash. You may experience one, some, or all of these symptoms:

    • Extreme pain and stiffness in the neck coupled with muscle tightness

    • Sudden, sharp pain in the upper back, arms, and shoulders

    • Blurry vision and headaches

    • Difficulties with focus and concentration

    • Unexpected extreme fatigue and tiredness or dizziness (vertigo)

Whiplash Treatment

So, what type of whiplash treatment can you expect to receive at a Chiropractor near you? At our Chiropractor in Aurora, IL, you’ll receive the following treatment for whiplash and other types of car accident injuries:

    • Most chiropractic care for whiplash involves spinal manipulation, where force or pressure is applied to the spine where it needs to be aligned to provide safe, effective pain relief.

    • Flexion-distraction techniques, instrument-assisted manipulation, and other types of spinal manipulation may be used to help alleviate the symptoms of whiplash.

    • Our chiropractor in Chicago will evaluate your injury and the severity of your whiplash to determine the best course of treatment.

    • Flexion-distraction helps to treat pain and herniated discs that often occur in whiplash.

    • Special instruments may be used to apply force to help “set” painful areas without applying too much direct force.

    • Chiropractic adjustments may be used to help, including gentle stretches and more.
